A metro link improving accessibility to the terminals, growth of the new terminal 2 (T2), a new taxiway & a tunnel under the route for airside (the area within an airport’s passport, Customs control & security checks) vehicular movement are being planned in the 2nd phase of the modernisation of the airport here.
The total cost for these upgrades, to be fulfilled amid financial years 2016 & 2019, is pegged at Rs 1,600 cr (Rs 16 billion), inclusive of interest cost & the pre-operative outgoings of Rs 341 cr. Executives at the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) outlined the increase plans last week and will form an Airport Users Consultative Committee include airlines, the Airport Authority of India & further stakeholders.

The airport is the second busiest in the country but suffers from airside congestion, reducing capacity. The integrated T2 terminal opened for international operations in Feb; domestic operations will shift there next year. Its hub probable, too, is confined. These expanding the T2 by building the southeast wharf that will let MIAL attach 7 passenger boarding bridges or aerobridges, taking the total to 29 bridges.
The proposed metro link to the airport as part of the Colaba-Santacruz Electronics Export dispensation Zone (-Seepz) line will decrease the commute time amid Colaba & the airport to 40 minutes from in all directions an hour now.
