WB soon to have new developmental body to foster road infrastructure
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s proposal to form a Highway Development Corporation (HDC) to improve the rural infrastructure has been approved by the state cabinet.
“Our aim is to ensure connectivity and increase vehicular speed, the new corporation would keep state highways and rural roads in good shape and this better infrastructure will benefit the rural economy”, said Industries minister Partha Chatterjee.
He further added that the HDC will undertake its first project known as Swarnali Rasta Prokalpa on the lines of the Prime Minister’s Sadak Yojna. It will function on the private-public-partnership model and will have PWD officials on board apart from hired professionals. Initially, it will start with a paid up capital of `50 crore.
Govt expects `5.88 lakh cr investments in roads & highways
During the12th plan, the government of India expects an investment of `5.88 crore on roads and highways. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Dr CP Joshi informed that a number of steps have been initiated to enable faster and more inclusive growth of the transportation sector.
L&T to construct four lanes elevated corridor in WB
The Infrastructure IC of L&T has secured new orders from the West Bengal government to construct four lane elevated corridor in Kazi Islam Sarani (VIP road).
“L&T bagged the contract from the Government of West Bengal, State Highway Circle-I, for the construction of four lane elevated corridor along Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani (VIP road) from Kestopur to Zora Mandir in the district of north 24 Parganas under JNNURM scheme,” said an official.

Odisha outlines `2100 cr road expansion plan
“The high level meeting on the state Road projects, presided by chief minister Navin Patnaik, decided to develop 800 km stretch of roads along with construction of road over bridges (ROBs) during the current financial year under different schemes with state plan and Non plan,” said works secretary SK Ray. He further added that `1,096 crore was provided under the Plan schemes during the current financial year while `1,034 crore under the Non-Plan schemes for the development of roads and related projects.
