New Delhi: The Ministry of Shipping has outlined a target of awarding 30 projects with an estimated investment of Rs23,724 crore during the current fiscal. The ministry through its recently outlined investment potential aims to add a capacity potential of 288.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

Besides, the ministry also aims to accelerate the process for developing two new projects – major port-cum-ship building yard in Andhra Pradesh and Sagar Port in West Bengal. The estimated investment for the projects are pegged at Rs12,500 crore. With an aim to fast track the bidding process, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has also cleared the proposals for the said projects.

Though the ministry had awarded more projects (32) in 2012-13 , the total investment was only Rs 6,765 crore and even the capacity addition was 136.75 MTPA. In a communication to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) this week, the shipping ministry has submitted that 20 of the 30 projects will be taken up on public-private-partnership (PPP) mode, attracting Rs 17,420 crore as investment.

These include creating mega container terminal at Chennai port with 48 MTPA capacity. This project would need Rs 3,686 crore investment . Another major project is single point mooring (SPM) at allied facilities in Veera at Kandla port with an estimated investment of Rs 621 crore.
