For the Ahmedabad Regional Rail Project, the Gujarat government and Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). RVNL, is a 100 per cent subsidiary of the ministry of railways. The proposed Ahmedabad regional rail system will connect periphery towns and villages with Ahmedabad through a dedicated rail network. It is another prestigious project like the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail project which has been lingering since the last one decade. The project will cover 288 km to connect towns around Ahmedabad. RVNL and the government of Gujarat will soon launch a joint venture company through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV). The earlier cost of the regional rail project was around Rs 5,000 crore which was supposed to network Ahmedabad with Sanand and go right upto Anand near Vadodara. As per the first Detailed Project Report (DPR) in 2005, the estimated cost was Rs 2,500 crore.
