In order to attract potential developers under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, the Tamil Nadu Government has decided to restructure the proposed Chennai monorail project. As per the restructuring, the Chennai monorail project will come up in two corridors of approximately 43.48 km. The first corridor will link Poonamallee, which is about 25 km west of Chennai, with Kathipara on the outskirts of the city. This 20.68 km long corridor will also have a link from Vadapalani to Porur. The second corridor will be a 22.80 km line from Vandalur, near Tambaram, to Velachery. The Tamil Nadu government is also contemplating setting up a monorail project in Coimbatore. As per the Transport Department policy note for 2014-15, tabled in the State Assembly recently, the government is in the process of identifying a consultant to carry out a feasibility study for the Coimbatore monorail project.
